Mentoring in business is an age old concept that has proven by its very durability to be effective. Perhaps this makes it so surprising that over recent decades the reliability of the approach has been questioned and in some cases the mentoring in business has been supplanted with consultants and what some now term coaches. Even though both liberally borrow from the mentoring concept, they fail to deliver the same quality of interaction that in the past has grown businesses and permitted entire corporations to grow from little hole in the wall stores.
The many applications of mentoring in business must not be overlooked. Consider for example the interaction with business executives. While those working for the company have a vested interest in keeping their opinions to themselves, a mentor has no qualms addressing what she or he perceives to be a problematic development. At the same time, since executives most commonly have a hard time accepting correction and even suggestions from those working for them, coming from an outside source is a surefire way of taking this relationship out of the equation and instead ensuring that the direction which the business executive may wish to explore can be communicated quickly and succinctly.
At the same time, employee mentoring is another valuable tool that mentoring in business provides. While coming from a supervisor it may cause an employee to chafe, when it comes from a disinterested third party or is arrived at via a brainstorming session facilitated by a mentor, the idea or concept is much more readily embraced. Add to this the idea that mentoring in business focuses not only on the needs of the company as a whole but also on the development of its workforce and thus seeks to empower the individual employee to advance through the ranks, and the importance of the approach soon becomes glaringly obvious.
This is not something that can be mimicked with the help of life coaches or the occasional motivational speaker who may be hired to deliver a pep talk to personnel. Instead, this approach provides little more than a quick fix but it addresses neither the problem itself – such as it exists – or tailors itself to the need of the individual worker who is encountering obstacles and seeks to deal with them as best as possible. No speaker or life coach is able to provide the personalized business attention that is only available within the confines of the mentoring approach.
Yet beware! In spite of the many applications of mentoring in business, they are not a cure all, nor can they provide a fix to a situation that is untenable. In some cases the need for change may even be made even more glaringly obvious and as a business owner you will be wise to consider this eventuality along the many others that perhaps you had hoped for. Of course, if changes do not to be made, you may rely on your mentor to help you gain the mindset required to see them through.
